Saving Tax Dollars
Refused to accept a county car, refused to accept a county cell phone, and refused to accept a 2009 salary increase, in order to save tax dollars
Voted to FREEZE 2009 Suffolk County General Fund property taxes
Sponsored and passed legislation to reform the process in which County government leases space to house various departments and offices, in order to save tax dollars
Renegotiated district office lease and moved to a smaller, dramatically less expensive office in the summer of 2009
Provided Middle Country and Sachem School Districts with the County specialized equipment inventory in order to encourage equipment sharing and taxpayer cost savings
Government Transparency and Efficiency
Sponsored and passed legislation directing the Department of Information Technology to develop a plan to create a Suffolk County government transparency web-site known as “Project Sunlight” (plan to be presented to SC Legislature, Spring 2009)
Sponsored and passed a procedural resolution directing the Clerk of the Legislature to post public hearings on the Suffolk County Legislature’s web-site
Co-Sponsored and passed bi-partisan measure with Legislator Barraga to commission a study seeking efficiencies and analyzing police models, the Suffolk County Police District, and 18 town and village police jurisdictions throughout Suffolk County
Sponsored and passed mandatory ethics training for elected Suffolk County officials and their appointed staff
Public Safety
Voted to fund 80 new police officers in the Suffolk Police Department in 2009, while keeping Suffolk County Police District costs within the tax cap
Voted to fund 6 new “911” operators in 2009
Voted to fund up to 55 new corrections officers in 2009
Armed Service Members and Vets Advocacy
Sponsored and passed legislation to allow for deployed military servicepersons and their families to regain their home from Suffolk County if it is lost to tax default
Sponsored and secured grant funding for the Suffolk County Council of Veterans of Foreign Wars creating a veterans and active duty families emergency assistance program
Sponsored and secured funding to create a Gold Star Families Memorial to be place in Armed Forces Plaza in Hauppauge
Protecting Local Businesses
Sponsored and passed Fair Business Practices legislation aimed at leveling the playing field for licensed businesses in Suffolk County
Improving Infrastructure
Co-Sponsored and passed legislation to reconstruct and enhance Nicolls Road
Sponsored and passed a Capital Budget Program for safety enhancements and traffic calming on Patchogue-Holbrook Road from the LIE to Portion Road
Sponsored and passed legislation to conduct a safety and traffic mitigation study at the intersections of Nicolls Road and Hammond Road and Nicolls Road and Hawkins Road
Sponsored and passed legislation appropriating funds for the planning and construction of a noise abatement structure on County Road 83
Coordinated meetings with the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic and County Public Works Department regarding the scheduled multi-million dollar Portion Road traffic calming project
Helping residents in an economic downturn
Co-Sponsored and passed a Middle Income Home Energy Assistance program to help Suffolk residents stay warm in the winter months
Sponsored and passed legislation directing the Department of Social Services to seek notices from towns and villages when a home is condemned in order to help children that may otherwise become homeless through no fault of their own
Sponsored local food drive in partnership with Long Island Harvest
Sponsored local holiday toy drive in partnership with Family Service League
Voted NO to raising 2009 parks fees on residents
Enhancing Suffolk County Community College
Working with SCCC administration to provide 20 additional acres at Ammerman Campus for future expansion and the development of a SUNY Empire State College facility
Supported the restoration of college projects in the last two adopted capital budgets
Supported the revision of the college budget process to ensure SCCC's continued accreditation by Middle States
Community Advocacy
Organized and co-hosted a Senior Citizens Service Expo to educate seniors on the various services available to them from local, State, and Federal government
Co-hosted community energy efficiency expo with LIPA
Sponsored local blood drive in partnership with New York Blood Services
